Vancouver, British Columbia is generally a peaceful, quite place, where clean streets and friendly residents are the norm. After a big hockey loss by their beloved Canucks at the hands of the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final, however, residents of the fair city took to the streets and rioted. Almost 150 people were hurt in the bizarre, violent outbreak and almost 100 were arrested. Anna Marie D’Angelo, spokeswoman for Vancouver Coastal Health, noted that three stabbing victims had been admitted on Thursday and one man was in critical condition after sustaining a head injury.
The majority of the victims of the rioting were taken to St. Paul’s Hospital in the downtown area of the city. The roughly 40 who sustained head injuries or were stabbed in earlier rioting were taken to D’Angelo’s Vancouver Coastal Health. According to Vancouver’s mayor, Gregor Robertson, “organized hoodlums bent on creating chaos incited the riot. They were here to make trouble and they succeeded.”
Noted Vancouver City Councilor Suzanne Anton, “I would never have believed that Vancouver would be a city where there would be looting. I just feel such a profound sense of disappointment. We like to think we live in paradise here in Vancouver. It’s hard to imagine here.” Indeed, Anton is not the only one surprised by the rioting. Throughout Canada and the U.S., the city is well-known for its idyllic lifestyle.
